MALE ROLES:

MOZART: (35) see below

Sussmayer: (25-35) Faithful (we think) servant of Wolfgang AND Costanza (has a crush). A third-tier composer who understands his limitations and Mozart’s lack thereof.

Sarastro: (45-55) The Ringmaster of the Cosmic Dance. Leader of all the forces for GOOD. Or, just a creation of Mozart’s Immagination?

Mesmer:(40-50) Mesmerizing Magician. Way down the chain from Sarastro. A Freemason, healer, and a bit of a huckster.

Franklin:(60-65) Inventor of the Glass Harmonica, and some other stuff. A freemason and statesman.

Einstein: (60-70) what can you say?

Schikanaeder: (30-50) Theatrical producer, Mason, Friend (in that order)

Messenger: (30-80) cryptic manservant or representative of the underworld?

Beethoven: early 20’s. The hot new thing, before deafness. Starting to make a name for himself. Brash young genius, respects Mozart’s genius, but no one else.

Papageno: Played by Schikanaeder

DOMENICO GUARDASONI: (40-60) Impresario of the Prague National Theater, enters. He is a chubby, engaging, Italian go-getter who could charm the underwear off a nun. He speaks with an accent.

FEMALE ROLES

COSTANZA: Mozart's Wife. Starts out pregnant in 1st scene.

Sophie: Constanza's younger sister. A sweet , giving, and forgiving nature

Josepha: Constanza's oldest sister, an imperious soprano.  “It’s all about me.”

This character may triple as:

Nun: an evil assassin in disguise

The Queen of The Night: The Dark Force, , hell-bent for revenge.

Thoughts on Mozart's character:

NATURE:

A TRUE NATURAL GENIUS. ONE OF THE GREATEST THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN.

Lives in 2 worlds:
Metaphysical-physical
The MUSIC (of the Spheres)-Patrons (commissions)
True Spirituality (Masons)-Hypocrisy (the Church)

Tapping into other dimensions of space-time-reality, or is it merely worsening delirium?

PERSONALITY:

Driven:
by his genius, his love of music, his unquenchable thirst to go beyond, to serve the brotherhood of man, to please his father (impossible)

Quick:
With his composing, with his wit, with his emotions

Confident:
Supremely confident in his music gifts
Less so socially (friends>women>authority(father) figures)
Even less so financially: often on the verge of total ruin.

Paradoxes:
Superficial-deep
Joyous-despondent
Hilarious-morose
Sickly-vigorous
Human-divine

Fam Hx:
Child prodigy
domineering father
travel
unlucky in love until Costanza

Career:

Frustration and under-appreciation
always forced to take a back seat to his obvious inferiors
forced to work for commissions that were beneath the arc of his genius
severe poverty for three years prior to start of play
despite all this, creating the greatest music the world had ever seen, and getting better. on the threshold of a whole new level
working on the magic flute
still seeking a court appointed position

Health;
alternating bouts of sickliness and vigor. vigorous over summer, but deterioration in the fall of 1791
